Porcelain depicting the state of civilization and enlightenment with colored illustrations with gold added

On sale

In 1853, Perry, commander-in-chief of the East India Squadron, arrived in Uraga with four warships and asked Japan to open its doors to the world after a long period of national seclusion. This plate is thought to represent the ship and its crew at that time. For the Japanese, the hats, clothes, and shoes they wore, as well as the color of their skin and eyes, were their first contact with a foreign culture. It is likely that they wanted to preserve the design of the dish as if it were a campus.
